Slovenia - Day 4 Lake Bled

Our second and final day trip for this short Easter trip. We were really lucky; we had just the perfect weather for this trip.

We arrived at Lake Bled after a 1.5 hour bus ride. We took our time walking to the lake and let the Little One enjoy the sun and the grass. Once we got to the lake, our jaws dropped. It is a purely beautiful and serene place. A massive lake with a church on its island, a castle on a cliff, and the backdrop of the snow-capped Alps.

Naturally we wanted to go up to the castle. The views from there would have been truly incredible, but having a toddler has its limitations. We really did try to find a way up that didn’t involve stairs or getting run over by cars, but we had no such luck. It’s such a steep climbs and there were so many steps that it made no sense at all (also impossible) to carry the Little One in her stroller.

So we did the only thing we could do, enjoy the lake and the scenery. We took a 6 km long walk around the lake, stopping to let the Little One practice her steps and feed the ducks. After that we sat down for some lunch, lamb and chicken, both very good, and then off we went back to Ljubljana.

It wouldn’t be a trip without a little bit of confusion though. When we got to the bus stop, there was a bus that had Ljubljana written on it. We got on and asked if it went there (just to be sure), the driver couldn’t really speak English but the passengers said that it wasn’t a direct bus and that we would have to change at another station. We were gonna wait for the direct bus and then thought better of it. Getting back earlier would be more convenient and one passenger assured us that the connecting bus would come 10 minutes after we were dropped off.

So we got on and 20 minutes later, we were waiting at another bus stop. And waiting. And waiting. We waited for maybe 45 minutes and when the bus finally came, it was the direct bus from Bled which we didn’t take. Naturally, it was also extremely full, so there was no way we could get on. Which really sucked. Because the next bus from Bled was running only in two hours, after 7 pm. There was no way we could wait at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere for that long with the Little One. I didn’t even have any more snacks for her. The bus driver assured us that another bus would come in 10 minutes. We were concerned it might also be too full and decided that if didn’t come, we would just cab it. Which would suck, financially. In the meantime, the passenger who had encouraged getting on the indirect bus, the one who presented himself as the all knowledgeable in everything Slovenia (he was a Dutch tourist), was not only unapologetic that he had inconvenienced everybody, he was suggesting we not take a taxi and all stick together based on advice given to him by his father in Holland. How was his father in Holland going to help us, exactly?

Anyway… a bus came along and it wasn’t full, so we got on and we’re on our way. It was a longer ride this time, but we were happy to be getting back before bedtime. There was no time to run around in the city center anymore (but she did plenty of that at the bus stop) and we planned our night exactly like the one before. Worked like a charm. She feel asleep on the way to the restaurant. Unfortunately though, the restaurant we wanted to try out ( a Lebanese place) was closed. So was the fantastic steak place.

We headed out to look for somewhere nice but everywhere was either closed or full. We ended up at a touristy pizza place by the river. Not our first choice but it was a good pizza nonetheless. Service was less good, we waited forever for our orders. But really good pizza.

And that was that. The next morning we just hung out in the apartment, packing up our stuff and then headed out to the airport.

Verdict: Slovenia is great. It would be a great place to rent a car and drive around the different towns to check out what’s there. Unfortunately we couldn’t do that this time around but maybe next time when she’s older, we’ll give it another go.
