After our whale watching fiasco, we got on a bus to our final destination before Colombo, Bentota, for some beach, sun and surf. We arrived, and asked for some directions to walk to our hotel. It was hot and the backpacks were really starting to weigh on us. We took a left turn off the main road and saw a couple of Russians and asked if they knew where our hotel was. The directions were strange: carry on straight ahead until you find a dirt road to your right. Take the dirt road until you find train tracks, cross the tracks and you’ll find the hotel. We found the dirt road, took it and it didn’t seem to lead anywhere. Ahead there was a dead end. By this time, I was starting to get cranky and I thought we were lost. I wanted to turn back. Hussein carried on a few more steps, next to the wall was a left turn and then some train tracks. Right across was our hotel. The Russians were right.
The hotel was really nice and the beach looked great. Unfortunately the sea was too rough to enjoy a good swim, but I found myself a surfing instructor and had my first (and only) hour of surfing. I can see why this sport is fun, but it’s exhausting. I managed to catch a couple of waves before my hour was up. I had planned to take another hour the second day but my muscles were so sore.

We spent our time reading, being lazy, and just enjoying our last few days of our holiday.
