We were supposed to go whale watching but as luck would have it, at 6:15 am, just before our pick up, the host at the guesthouse came up and said they had cancelled the trip. There was a storm and seas were rough, we wouldn’t be able to see anything.

We went to sleep for a bit, had breakfast, and the took the bus to Galle. We had planned Galle for the next day, but since we were still going to try to see the whales then, we decided to head to Galle. It was only an hour bus ride or so.

So far Galle has been my favorite city. It used to be an old fort, built by the Portuguese and then given over to the Dutch. From the fort wall, there are spectacular views of the sea and the town and inside the fort, all the buildings are small and quaint. They did a really good job maintaining the old look and feel, with coblestone streets and one-storey houses.

The city itself is much larger that what’s in the fort, but the fort is really the only thing that interested us.

We went to bed early, ready to give whale-watching another try.
